Home Security Tips for Crime Prevention-Renters

Home…….A place to unwind after a long hard day at work.  A place you feel safe to lay your head down for a good night’s sleep.  It’s a place to store many of your possessions.  A place where you can invite friends for an impromptu get together.  But, before deciding on just the right place to call home, here are a few Home Security Tips for Crime Prevention for Renters.

Considerations When Shopping For Your New Home:

  • Local Crime—It would be just terrible to move into a place you want to call home and discover crime is a major issue.  My daughter, had a job that required her to move from location to location at least once a year.  Because of her busy schedule, she was sometimes forced to do her apartment hunting online.  Pictures do not always tell the whole story.  Wouldn’t it be nice to have a way to view an areas crime rate before moving?  Well you can.  SpotCrime is a free online site that allows you to see crime hotspots in a neighborhood you may be targeting.
  • Lighting—It’s important to have good lighting in all common areas.  You do not want to live in an apartment building or complex with dark nooks that allow people to sneak around undetected.  A few other areas of concern would be:  Hallways, Parking Areas, Storage Rooms, Stairwells, Laundry Rooms, Mailrooms, and Dumpsters.
  • Secure Entryways—The first line of defense should be the entryway.  It doesn’t matter if you are looking at a large complex or a single family unit, the entryway must be secure.  If you are moving to a complex, ask management how often they change the keys and key codes.
  • Emergency Exits—If you are drawn to large buildings, check for posted fire escape plans.  Also, take a walk around the building to make sure burglars can’t reach fire escape ladders from the ground.

Critical Piece Needed Before Moving In:

  • Renters Insurance—In spite of all the precautions you might take, bad and or unexpected things still happen.  Many renters make the erroneous assumption that the landlord or the landlord’s policy will cover any of their losses.  That is just not true.  So, I strongly suggest you purchase a Renters Insurance Policy.  A Renter’s Insurance Policy will cover your personal property like furniture, clothing, TVs, utensils, and various possessions against many insurable perils including burglary, fire, water from a broken pipe, etc.  It also provides coverage for personal liability claims, and medical costs if a visitor injures themselves in your rented unit.

Security Checklist After Moving In:

  • Windows—One simple way to keep your place off of the thief’s hit list is to prevent outsiders from looking in, by covering windows with blinds and/or curtains.  Keep them shut when you are not at home or any time after dark.  Check each window to verify the locks are in working order.  Any lock not working properly should be replaced.  Also, please check to see if all windows are locked before going to the mailbox or taking your dog for a walk.
  • Doors—Upgrade your door locks with deadbolt locks (with the landlord’s permission), if not already installed.  Talk to the landlord about changing the regular locks on your door as well.  Install a peephole.  If your unit doesn’t have a peephole, make sure you install one as soon as possible.  Today, there are door viewers that include a peephole, door camera, doorbell, indoor viewer, and intercom.  In fact, these modern hi-tech items allow you to see who is at your front door on your smartphone, so you can see who is at your door without moving from your sofa.  If your unit comes with sliding doors on your deck, balcony, or patio there are a few inexpensive but highly effective corrective measures available.
    •  A door jammer is a great security measure that is easy to install, but not vulnerable to lock bumping, or picking.
    •  A sliding door security bar is perfect for adding extra protection.  Once again, this is a very inexpensive solution that you can do yourself.
  • Safe—If you have, jewelry, cash, heirlooms, or important documents lying around and would like to put them somewhere out of site, and add a second level of security, consider investing in a high level safe.  A safe could be a deterrent for burglars and less trustworthy guests.
  • Cameras—There was a time when the thought of having security cameras in your rented unit was unimaginable.  Today, security cameras can be a surprisingly affordable addition to apartment security. Many security cameras and smart video doorbells have motion detection, night vision, and two way talk. The added bonus is, a lot of the cameras on the market today are easily installed and portable.
  • Security System—Your unit might come with a security system.  But if not, look for a system that doesn’t require an invasive installation that requires tearing up walls and lots of wiring.  There are plenty of security systems to choose from, all providing different options.  Today, your system can be controlled through a smartphone or computer.  Many systems can be customized for apartment living and they are easy to install.  These wireless systems use adhesive to fix door and window sensors in place.  As an added bonus, having a security system can reduce the annual cost of your Renters Insurance.


Moving into a new place under the best of circumstances can be stressful.  The intent of this article is to take as much stress out of the equation as possible.  Instead, I would like to replace that stress with excitement.  Knowing your new home is secure, will make what could be stressful much more enjoyable.

These home security tips for crime prevention can help protect your new home from possible intrusion, and burglaries.  But, if an unwanted intrusion or burglary should occur or an unexpected loss from a fire or broken pipe, the Renters Insurance purchased will help to indemnify your loss.

I learned quickly in my new home, that I would need security.  I bought a home in Florida from Texas without personally checking out the neighborhood etc.  Wish I had, I would not have bought where I did.  But I do love the house, and the neighbors have turned out to be very nice.  I ended up with Ring cameras all around my house.  And they have definitely come in handy.  Definitely worth it for piece of mind!

  2. These are some very good tips that you have provided to have my rental home security improved. Unfortunately, I had burglars before, when I was away on holiday with my dogs, and so burglars took advantage of that to break into the house. With the extra costs of a broken door and a stolen camera. My insurance didn’t cover the broken door, do you know of any insurances out there that do repay such a cost? thanks!

      Sorry to hear about the burglary to your unit.  These things are always upsetting and inconvenient.  A fact that may be important to know in your situation is, a renters policy will only cover your personal property.  The door is attached to the structure (building) which is owned by the landlord, and the landlord should have an insurance policy that provides coverage for his damaged property.  I am sure his policy has a deductible and the cost to replace the door may have been under his deductible, but that cost should not be passed on to you.  If you still have the receipt for the replaced door, I suggest sending a copy of that receipt to the landlord with a short note requesting reimbursement.   Hope this helps.  Let me know if you things turn out.
